Day 503 – Total Lunar Eclipse Of 2010

Probably the most photographed subject that day. Here’s my contribution. I took it when the Moon was in its deepest shadow, capturing the most vibrant coppery red hues of the night. It was beautiful. Fortunately, no clouds got in the way. If I knew of this event earlier, I would have rented a major telephoto lens at B&H or Adorama.

Glad you got it, man. And beautiful it is. The pictures I took on my iPhone didn’t come out at al. – no doubt beacuse it had no flash!

Ahahah :) I don’t think one could get anything around that time without a tripod (they sell some for iPhones by the way). But it’s funny that you’d mention a flash; I’ve seen a few going off in the neighborhood.

You did a great job catching the glorious orange color. The details on the surface are quite nice too. I had hoped to shoot this as well – set an alarm that I then ignored. Should have just stayed up! Glad you caught it.

It was tricky to select the proper exposure, lots of trial and error. Fast enough so the moon remained sharp (it moves) and not too high a ISO for optimal details. I stayed up until 4am or so, going outside every twenty minutes to follow the progression of the eclipse. I don’t think I would have acknowledged my alarm either. Staying up was definitely the way to go!

Beautiful! My son tells me the color happens because of refracted light. You did a great job capturing this!

I had a difficult time forcing myself to stay in on this lunar eclipse — was trying to get my health back and knew I would end up shooting the whole thing if I started. Great work!

    @ Carol Allen Anfinsen
    Thanks!

    @ Mike
Well, maybe it was easier for me since I didn’t have to wake up early the next day… else I really would have had a tiny night!

Exquisite shot. A unique view of the moon.

Thank you. What’s funny is that if I had a longer telephoto lens, I probably would have framed it dead center. I had to be a little more creative here and I actually do like the result :)

Excellent photo of the moon. Where was this shot taken?
