“Helping Herself”
Jasmine was helping us cleaning up the fridge. Well, more like playing with the yogurts. I took that opportunity to get a couple of shots. “Oh, so innocent I am”. She moved as I was taking the photo so there is a little bit of motion blur, but I still like it. I’m sure she will cherish it when she grows up. If you always wait for the perfect light and perfect moment, you will regret missing a lot of shots. I’m reminding myself of this quite often. Life is not a studio.

“9 Iron”
Once again, I used my homemade light box. This time, I wanted to capture more texture. An antique cast iron made for a great subject. I used my tripod in order to shoot at ISO 50 and f/16. A very clean image but I feel it’s lacking something, way too bare as is… Sure, it would work great for eBay, but I will need to think it through harder next time. A better background is in order.

“Maasai Warrior”
This statuette of a proud Maasai warrior is a gift from my grandmother. An object I’ve always known. A project of mine is to photograph things that are meaningful to me, however mundane they can be. It could even be a door knob. Objects that I would recognize in an instant. The challenge will be to make them look interesting as well. As for the statuette, I decided to convert it to black and white, not far from its original color anyway. It gained in intensity.

“Shot”
I knew what I wanted to achieve but getting there has been a little difficult and I can’t say I’m entirely satisfied with the result. I would have liked the shot glass to have a nice reflection, but didn’t quite have the right setup for it. I’ve had to be really creative to get something even remotely close to what I was going for. The illumination had to come from underneath the glass, so I used a Maglite®. The shot glass was too small so I then covered part of the flash light with a CD, which also acted as a mirror surface and enabled some interesting reflections. The light was still too strong for a regular liquid. I needed something with more viscosity and used honey, which also gave some nice bubbles. Once I have the right setup, I’ll definitely try it again. Not a perfect shot, but I had fun.
