“Standing Tall”

Jasmine kept running towards this indoor parking wall, then away from it. She would pause, turn to look at me and mimic the way I was standing: crossing her arms, letting them dangle on both sides, and so on. Her many different poses gave me the idea leading to this shot. Unfortunately, I was unable to take more than a handful. She grew tired of it as I was taking my camera out of its bag.

I’m happy with the result, albeit an obvious flaw: my daughter is slightly out of focus. Usually, I would cast it aside and use another photo instead. However, there’s something about this specific shot that I really like, something that wasn’t present in any other of the well focused shots.

Yesterday, my wife showed me an article about writers and how they go through drafts prior to their finished masterpiece. How it’s important to let loose during the first draft, not refrain oneself by fear of writing something imperfect. Eventually, wonderful ideas can come out of those imperfect paragraphs, which will be refined in a second draft.

As a photographer, I can totally identify with it. This shot is imperfect, but not much would need to be changed to make it work. It is my first draft. I can refine it.
