Day 487 – A Wicked Good Clam Chowder

December 5, 2010

Clam chowders are almost a staple food in New England, but they aren’t all made the same. The one we had at 3 Dogs Cafe was out of this World. Not only was it delicious and hearty, but the portion served was also very generous. 3 Dogs Cafe is also a pastry shop, and I wouldn’t leave without having one of their yummy desserts. It was my birthday, so my wife and parents surprised me later that day with a flourless chocolate cake that they purchased there. Yummy. They also have good beer at affordable prices, such as Dogfish Head. What isn’t there to like? If you find yourselves around Rockland one day, you know where to stop. At the end of our vacation, my wife said: “I feel like I had a two-week culinary trip in Maine”. I have to agree, the food really was wonderful.

Day 394 – Primary Colors

Not a very interesting image – at least to me – and I assure you, nothing deeply psychological to interpret here either. I only had five minutes until midnight to find something in the apartment, set it up and shoot. The bright colors attracted me and that’s about it.

Day 393 – Rice Cake

I was gonna make you guess what it is but realized how difficult a task that would be given my wife’s first reaction upon seeing the photo: “Ewww, gross, what is that? Some sort of rotten food?”. Huh, well, no honey, you do eat it that way, it’s one of your rice cakes. To be fair, I do occasionally take shots of gross stuff, including rotten food… I find it rather interesting how some subjects become so unfamiliar when taken up close. It really shows how little we pay attention to details.

“Foodscape”

First and foremost, I have to give some credit to my wife: she’s the one who poured the ingredients. I just happened to pass by at the right moment, temporarily halting the cake making process. It’s funny how I seem to be drawn towards food photography lately. I do enjoy it, which makes perfect sense since I equally enjoy food itself. It just isn’t something I thought of before I started my project 365. I shall explore it more.

The light was the tricky part here, with the egg yolks surfaces being so reflective. I had to use a piece of cardboard as a makeshift gobo in order to block some of the light falling on them. It proved to be a very effective technique as I was able to retain the reflections I wanted. A couple of hours later, this concoction turned into a delicious pumpkin spice bread.
